“With a lifetime spent in the forests and mountains of the Pacific Northwest, I've been fortunate to have a variety of surprise encounters with wildlife that also call this land home. From a young age, I walked the forest around my home looking for signs of wildlife: feathers, footprints, scratches on tree bark. With formal studies in visual art as a young adult, I began representing my love for wildlife on paper. What began as scientific, black and white drawings, transformed into colorful and playful representations of some of my favorite species. As I paint, I give personality to the animal and experiment with gaze and expression. My curiosity in different species shifts naturally over time. Sometimes this shift is inspired by a myth featuring the personality of an animal. Sometimes, the shift comes from an encounter.  When a family of great horned owls moved into a ponderosa tree near my home, I painted them. When the call of ravens surprised me on a quiet walk, they became my subject day after day. These unexpected interactions intrigue me and I remain open to who will come my way and how they will unfold beneath my paintbrush. In sharing my artwork, my hope is that others may find a connection to an animal or be reminded of their own love for the wild.” - Morgan Padgett
